Are the colors we use in our artworks casual or perfectly studied? How can we decide the color? In the next few articles, we’ll try to discover and understand the aspects of this topic.
What’s the color theory?
The rules about the use of colors are called color theory.These rules are used in different areas, such as advertising.or graphic.
The primary color
The idea behind the original graphic design was that we were able to generate whatever kind of color we wanted by using the three fundamental colors, called the primary colors. There was:
- Red
- Yellow
- Blue
By mixing this 3 main color we could create the secondary color:
- Orange (Red+Yello)
- Purple (Red+Blue)
- Green (Yellow+Blue)
In the end the terziry colors were the fusion of secondary and primary toghether.
The color wheel
During hystory painters tried to understand how these color work.The study of color has become more complex due to the addition of new variables:
- Hue
- Chroma
- LIghiting
The theory changed everything with these new parameters.At this point a new category of color was added. The achromatic colors:
- White
- Grey
- Black
Colors that are right opposite each other in the colour wheel cancel out each other’s hues, according to a conjecture made by Newton; this idea was more proven scientifically in the 19th century. The new discovery changed the color wheel putting the white at the center of the wheel.
