Effect of color black on our mind
Effect of color black on our mind
If this is the first article about color psychology that you read I suggest you to start your journey from the introduction (click here to go there). The color black is a strange hue becuase it is the absence of color itself. Even in this case our brain have some reaction:
Positive one:
- Authority
- Elegance
- Formality
- Intelligence
- Power
- Prestige
Negative one:
- death
- sad
- edgy
- anger
- aggression
- fear
- mystery
- sadness
As usual we’ll try to cover all this different effect even if some of them are deeply connected with other chromatic hues (anger is connected with red too as sadness that is connected with blue).
Color black: sign of power, elegance and more
The stereotypical clothing code is tied to theb majority of black’s positive connotations.
The black suit is a representation of elegance, much like the red tie that conveyed the impression of authority (we discussed the influence of red here).
The image of elegance link the idea of the successful man, making it easier to picture a smart, strong individual.
Wearing black is also associated with formality, prestige and even authority
Color of death
The represantation of death usually uses dark hues. The representation of death and lost produces a direct connection with the 5 phases of grief:
- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Depression
- Acceptance
Anger, sadness are connected with dark tones of respectivly red and blue.
Color of mystery and fear
The black hue is the color that dominates the night time. As we said in the article about the color blue our mind associate the color of nature with specific perpetions. The black is associated with night time so mystery because we can’t see in the dark and with that there is a direct connection with fear.
Film industry uses this hue to create mysterious character. For this reason the dark color are also a symbol of bad and evilness. Even comics used this effects to create some mysterious heros like for example Batman.
